01 — Overview

Expensive, precise,
utterly breathtaking

Switzerland is where vanlife reaches its visual peak. No other country in Europe packs so many extraordinary mountain passes, glacier-blue lakes, and snowfield panoramas into such a compact space. The Gotthard, the Furka, the Grimsel, the Susten, the Julier — each one is a world-class drive in its own right.

It comes at a price. Switzerland is consistently one of Europe's most expensive countries — campsites, fuel, food, and the mandatory motorway vignette all add up. But the landscapes are so extraordinary, and the infrastructure so flawless, that most vanlifers find it impossible to leave quickly.

Six places worth the detour

Switzerland is small enough to drive across in a day — and rich enough to spend a month in.

Graubünden & the Engadine

Switzerland's largest and most diverse canton: the Engadine valley, St Moritz lake, the wild Bernina pass road, and the Swiss National Park — the country's only national park, and one where nature has been left entirely alone since 1914.

Bernese Oberland

The Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau above Grindelwald; the turquoise Brienzersee and Thunersee lakes; the Aare gorge at Meiringen. The most concentrated Alpine scenery in the world, all within an hour of Bern.

Lake Geneva & Lavaux

The Lavaux wine terraces above Lac Léman are a UNESCO World Heritage site — steep-sloped vineyards over the deepest blue lake in Switzerland, with the Alps across the water. Montreux, Château de Chillon, and the Vaud Riviera stretch the whole southern shore.

The Alpine Passes

Furka, Grimsel, Susten, Gotthard, Julier, Maloja — Switzerland's mountain passes are the finest driving roads in Europe. Each one is unique: the Grimsel follows a chain of glacial lakes; the Furka was the James Bond Aston Martin road; the Susten is completely hidden from the valley below.

Ticino & Lake Lugano

Switzerland's Italian-speaking canton south of the Gotthard. Palm trees, Mediterranean light, and a completely different cultural atmosphere — yet still unmistakably Swiss in quality and organisation. Lugano, Locarno, and the Val Verzasca are all outstanding.

Appenzell & Eastern Switzerland

The rolling pre-Alpine hills of Appenzell feel like a different world from the high Alps: painted farmhouses, cowbells, the world's finest Appenzeller cheese, and the ridge walk from Kronberg to Hoher Kasten with views into Austria, Liechtenstein, and Germany.

Two ways to drive it

Switzerland rewards those who take the mountain roads — not the tunnels.

7 days ~700 km

The Classic Alpine Loop

The Furka, Grimsel, Susten, and Gotthard — the greatest concentration of mountain pass roads in the world.

  1. Day 1–2
Bern & the Bernese Oberland Start in Bern — the most underrated Swiss city. Drive south to Grindelwald for the Eiger north face view. Camp beside Brienzersee for two nights and swim in the morning.
  2. Day 3
Grimsel & Furka Passes Drive the Grimsel in the morning — glacial lakes in every direction. Cross the Rhône glacier at the top and descend the Furka. This is the most spectacular single day's driving in Switzerland.
  3. Day 4–5
Ticino via the Gotthard Cross the old Gotthard pass road (not the tunnel), descend into Italian-speaking Ticino, and spend two days at Lake Lugano or Locarno. Swim, eat Italian food, and forget you're in Switzerland briefly.
  4. Day 6–7
Susten Pass & Lake Lucerne Return north via the Susten — the quietest and arguably finest of the central passes. Finish at Lake Lucerne, take the boat to Rütli meadow where Switzerland was founded in 1291, and spend the final night above the town.
6 days ~550 km

Graubünden & the Engadine

Eastern Switzerland's wildest canton — the Bernina Pass, the Swiss National Park, and the Engadine valley.

  1. Day 1–2
Chur & the Rhine Gorge Start at Chur — the oldest town in Switzerland. Drive the Ruinaulta (Swiss Grand Canyon) along the young Rhine, then follow the Vorderrhein west. Camp in the gorge bottom.
  2. Day 3
Swiss National Park Drive through the only Swiss national park — no marked campsites inside, but the surrounding valley campsites are excellent. Hike the Il Fuorn trail for guaranteed ibex and red deer sightings.
  3. Day 4–5
Bernina Pass & Poschiavo Cross the Bernina Pass — the highest open-year-round pass in the Alps. The UNESCO Bernina Express railway runs alongside. Descend to Italian-flavoured Poschiavo and camp beside the lake.
  4. Day 6
St Moritz & the Engadine Return through St Moritz — expensive but the lake is extraordinary. Drive the Upper Engadine valley north through Zernez and Zuoz — two of Switzerland's most perfectly preserved village centres.
